Frame-tastic! Prescott’s Frame & I celebrates 40 years in business this September!
Picture this: Prescott, AZ, 1984. Population 21,000. Downtown was home to department stores, mechanics, newsstands, and award shops, with a few bars scattered in. The tourist industry hadn’t really taken off, nor had Prescott gained notoriety as a retirement community. Ranching, equestrian, and cowboy life were prevalent. Embry Riddle was only 6 years old, and there was one movie theater (the Marina) with only two screens. This sleepy little western town, formerly the state capitol, was a forgotten gem in the heart of Arizona.
Into this tiny town Joe and Joanna Hensley hatched their idea of a picture framing shop, gallery, and art supply store. They rapidly became one of the best-known picture framers in the region, offering a huge variety of picture frame styles and choices. Original paintings and unique prints graced the walls. Eventually Joe hired Kathleen and Ida, and once he was ready to retire, they banded together to buy the Frame and I from him in 1997. Russell Johnson, the current store manager, came to work there soon after. Johnson’s own original landscape artwork is featured in the gallery; and is highly sought after.
Onto the present day!
Much has changed since the 80’s! Our little frame shop has seen Prescott grow and flourish as a community. We’ve been so happy to be a part of Prescott’s growth, and to have framed generations of client’s artwork and photos! Our work is on the walls in many homes and venerable institutions here, and we’re going to keep on framing for many more years. We plan to grow with Prescott and look forward to what is yet to come!
